As an artist and storyteller Beatrix Potter is world-famous. Her work in protecting some of the finest examples of the Lake District’s landscapes is legendary and she has done wonders in putting the Lake District on the map for its literary heritage as well as the allowing the stunning landscape to speak for itself.
At Hill Top, she created some of the most romantic interiors and a beautiful garden. Her picturesque house and the breathtaking scenery inspired many of Beatrix’s stories and drawings. This book looks at the relationship between the Lake District and her work and includes numerous extracts from her letters and diaries, as well as atmospheric photographs from the Beatrix Potter archive.
Beatrix Potter was quite the representative for her beloved Lake District With revenue from the sales of her books, Beatrix Potter bought a farm – Hill Top – where she later became a farmer and prize-winning sheep breeder.
Helen Beatrix Potter, known as Beatrix, was born on 28 July 1866 to Rupert and Helen Potter in Kensington, London.
When Beatrix was sixteen, the family stayed at Wray Castle, overlooking Lake Windermere, and this is where she fell in love for this part of the world and for the countryside of the Lake District. The magic of Peter Rabbit was born!
