Rosalind Porter has always defied expectations – in her work as a physicist on the Manhattan Project to design the atomic bomb, and in her passionate love affair with coworker Thomas Weaver.
Five years after the end of both, her guilt over the results of her work and her heartbreak over Weaver are intertwined. She has almost succeeded in resigning herself to a more conventional life.
Then Weaver gets back in touch – but so does the FBI. Agent Charlie Szydlo wants Rosalind to spy on Weaver, whom the FBI suspects of selling nuclear secrets to Russia.
As Rosalind’s final assignment launches her on a dangerous mission to find the truth, she faces a heartbreaking choice . Believe the man who taught her how to love? Or trust the man who her love might save?
This novel is all about women working in science and it’s fascinating. Bearing in mind that this takes place in Chicago in the 1950s and so the chances for women were very different back then. The story takes us to the heart of the Manhattan Project. When a woman working there leaves and takes up another job, she then discovers that an FBI Agent is very interested in talking to her…
The story takes the reader right to the heart of the Cold War, the post war period where the world feared that Russia had the Atomic bomb and were wanting a more deadly bomb than that. The work behind the scenes from both sides of the iron curtain is fascinating and the time and experiences tied in with McCarthyism is compelling.
There’s tales of Japanese prisoners, FBI American agents and Russian spies….
The novel is full of scientific detail but it’s easy to understand and it’s fascinating!
