Why a Booktrail?
1935 onwards: One summer’s day a cloud descends which casts its shadow for years to come
1935 onwards: One summer’s day a cloud descends which casts its shadow for years to come
On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching her too is Robbie Turner who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have been changed for ever, as Briony commits a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone.
The action of the book takes place in various places in England including London and Dunkirk but the film took the locations to a whole new level and so both are worth a visit and should be involved in any booktrail.
It looked amazing in the film and looks even more amazing in real life. You can tour the impressive house and gardens and read the book itself on one of its many benches or on the lawn. See the fountains but don’t dive in. Just picture those scenes in your mind’s eye.
Other scenes were shot in and around Westminister and the Aldwych tube station but it’s the Dunkirk scenes which really surprise as these were filmed in and around England with places as random as Redcar and the marshes of Cambridge doubling up for the bombed out French locations.
There’s a great deal of information here on the real Dunkirk and the history of those who had to fight, and the stresses of those who came home.
