Various times: A witty excavation of the present by the past
Autumn is a witty excavation of the present by the past. The novel is a stripped-branches take on popular culture and a meditation, in a world growing ever more bordered and exclusive, on what richness and worth are, what harvest means.
Daniel is a century old. Elisabeth, born in 1984, has her eye on the future. The United Kingdom is in pieces, divided by a historic once-in-a-generation summer.
Autumn is a exploration of life and a study of every person living in Great Britain post-Brexit.
Historical figures from the past ground this novel in time and place. Caroline Keeler of Profumo fame takes an important role as does Pauline Boty – a founder of the British Pop art movement and the only female painter in the British wing of the movement.
As for the magic of books and reading, there is a phrase which shines out:
“’Always be reading something,’ he said. ‘Even when we’re not physically reading. How else will we read the world?’”
