The Autumn Ball is a prize-winning novel by the Estonian writer Mati Unt is an unusual one – it lacks a traditional plot, a hero and a conflict. Nevertheless, the account it offers of an autumn’s events in the lives of six colorful characters – a mediocre poet, a conceited architect, a misanthropic barber, a pseudointellectual debauchee, an attractive divorcee and her inquisitive son – all at odds with their urban environment.
Estonia is the most northerly of the three Baltic states, and has linguistic ties with Finland.
Since the book doesn’t have locations as such and is more of a series of observations as to what life was like in the city of Tallinn and Estonia as a whole during the Soviet controlled era, the map shows several museums and historical landmarkts in the city to visit.
Autumn Ball (Estonian: Sügisball) is a 2007 Estonian drama film directed by Veiko Õunpuu, adapted from the novel. The film depicts six desolate people of various fates in Soviet pre-fabricated housing units which were common at the time.
