1963: Joana lives a quiet life in a large mansion at the foot of the Pyrenees, banished by her powerful husband and alienated from her family. Meanwhile, in Barcelona, her daughter Carla is impoverished and in trouble. Carla has embraced the student movement against the Franco regime, and, just before their wedding, her beloved fiance is arrested.
Pregnant Carla runs to grandmother Maria, terrified, powerless to help either Luc or herself. Maria shelters her, but they know their movements are still being followed. Why did her daughter Joana marry into the Franco regime and abandon her family? Maria has never understood.
“What else can you call it when a girl from a staunchly Republican family and village walks into the arms of the enemy in exchange for a soft life in Girona?”
This is the story of the Revolution and the reason why one woman would give everything up to walk into the arms of the enemy according to her family.
This is the view of Barcelona from the eyes of the civil war. The story of a family who lived behind the iconic cathedral. A grandmother who moved to Girona and a life lived on the pretty cobbled streets of Barcelona such as Las Rambla and the harbour, but with ghostly footprints covering their every move.
