Orphaned in Canton and brought to England by a mysterious guardian, Babel seemed like paradise to Robin Swift.

The author explains how and why she illustrates the city of Oxford as she does. Oxofrd Union she explains was not established until 1856 so in the novel it is called the United Debating Society as it was in 1823.
The Vaults and Garden Cafe didn’t exist in 1836 but the author really wanted her characters to go there since she loves it so much. The Twisted Root is fictional and there is no Taylor’s on Winchester Road.
Martyrs’ Memorial wasn’t completed until 1843 but it is in the novel.
