2000s: A black comedy set in Bangkok about financial collapse, corruption and altruism.
A pseudo-Buddhist monk, an illegal immigrant, a bipolar teenager and a quixotic pair of young businessmen are all bound by Eastern Vision, an empire selling everything from faux-Eastern objets to real estate, from client-centred sperm-donation to gypsy magic.
Phetbin
The family live in what they call the sprawling slum of Phetbin in Bangkok. They go to the shop to buy coca cola but really what they are really doing is going to someone’s garage.
The rest of the city comes alive in all shades of black and grey – some golden bits of the city with the royal quarters and the glitz of the rich, but the novel mainly looks at the contrast between this public view of the city and the parts hidden behind such as the Phetbin slum.
