2000s: A tour around Bangkok with a difference!
A single white, middle aged man goes to Bangkok….but that’s where the ordinary of the story ends. Lawrence Osborne’s story is as colourful as the cover of the book it portrays. This is a unique guide to the city and its people, its idiosyncrasies and its dark corners. What do you think of when you read or hear about Bangkok? There is more than one story to everything and as Lawrence eats and wanders his way around the city, there is a lot to find out. some will surprise you, some will make you smile, whilst others will have you thankful you’re not really there. But it will linger in your memory like any good travelling experience should
Tourists come to Bangkok for many reasons. The city is a buzz of activity, noise, and great food. The city offers much and everything all at the same time. Lawrence might have come for one reason, but he soon finds out that life here is cheap and that he can live on just a few dollars a day.
On the Chao Phraya River : “The Chao Phraya River is filled with gentle monks bobbing around on water taxis”
There’s quite a few cultural activities you might want to try for yourself such as piling food on a banana leaf and eating on the run, wandering into one of the many one way streets into a bar you’d never seen before and will probably never find again. Stumbling across a decaying old temple or stumbling over someone in the street, begging. Further along a road which used to be an elephant track, there are street vendors and street walkers – where all kinds of things are on sale…
