Back from her expedition in Guatemala (the setting of her last novel “Grave Secrets”) Tempe is just about to set off on holiday with detective Andrew Ryan, a colleague from Montréal when a few things come to her attention – a newborn’s charred remains, a drug den, black residue from a plane crash, various bones found on a farm…..and that’s not all.
Then a mysterious stalker leaves chilling snapshots. What has Tempe stumbled into?
Québec – the star of the show in novels such as “Déjà Dead” is not mentioned in the novel as the action is firmly routed in Charlotte, North Carolina.
There is a very interesting plot line surrounding the Melungeons (which means “cursed” or “lost soul”) live in the Appalachians and are believed to be descendants of Portuguese sailors and First Nations amongst others.
Reichs also picks issues that seem to matter to her personally and in this novel the illegal hunting of animals such as bears for medicinal purposes is explored and adds interest to the overall story.
Once again the forensic setting – whether in the morgue or in the field are very gruesome but endlessly fascinating.
