2000s: Nantucket takes your cares away…if you let it…
When Vicki Stowe arrives in Nantucket for a summer holiday with her two young sons, her best friend Melanie and her sister Brenda, all three women are running from trouble.
Brenda has just lost her prestigious job in scandalous circumstances; Vicki has been diagnosed with cancer and is facing months of treatment; Melanie, who has been struggling for years to have a baby, has just discovered that she is pregnant – and that her husband is having an affair.
The women soon find life in a cramped cottage with only one bathroom not quite the idyll they imagined. Salvation comes in the form of Josh, who quickly becomes part of the chaotic household, helping the women but also dividing them as their feelings for him start to grow beyond friendship . . .
Even from afar the island looks like a dream for a holiday!
“A summer on Nantucket was the answer all the way around.”
The area of the island where the market and shops are located. Shell Street is a place of interest in the novel and Brenda’s favourite three words are Shell Street, Sconset. In the 19th century, there was a whaling station present in the village. In 1877 Edward Underhill from Wolcott, New York bought land in the village and constructed cottages in the fashion of the original fishing shacks and then rented them to summer tourists.
There is a crush of people on the wharf – those disembarking, those picking up house guests, tourists wandering the shops, hungry couple in search of lunch. Nantucket is always busy! With Brant Lighthouse in the background, this really is the place to relax, take a stroll and read a book (ie this one!)
The shop for restaurants and shops. Take a bike like the rest of the islanders seem to use. Did you know you don’t even need a car on Nantucket? It’s too charming for cars! And too charming for tents apparently as you’re not allowed to camp anywhere on the island.
