2000s: A case of murder,a case of regret and a case the police will never forget
On a small Dutch island a body is found.
Veteran detective Inspector Jaap Rykel of Amsterdam’s Murder Squad is swiftly called in on the case and he soon identifies a suspect, who hands himself over. Yet the man has no history of violence, no motive, and no connection to the victim.
On the other side of Holland, a similar murder – and confession – is reported and Rykel wonders if these are random senseless acts, or something more mysterious.
Rykel is drawn deeper into a sinister case which leads him to places and people he never wanted to see….will he conquer this case before the case destroys him
Vlieland is a small and most northern island off the coast of the Netherlands. It has only one town and is largely made up of sand dunes and open spaces. The island is also car free so is a lot more space and calm than Amsterdam! Every school child can tell you that Vlieland is the second of the ‘Waddeneilanden’.
There’s an expansive beach on Vlieland, and the land is very open. It’s part of the Hoge Veluwe National Park. the land has been bough in 1909 by a wealthy industrial couple apparently and this is where the woman was found
Jaap Rykel soon starts to realise that there is something really not quite right within the police force in Amsterdam. He has his work cut out more than ever. But the canals and cobbled streets continue to confuse and misdirect. The city does have its charms however even in this novel if you look hard enough:
The glories of the Golden Age, museums small cafes and bricklined streets….the whole place is almost too chocolate box
“Rotterdam in the other hand is a city which commissioned a massive bronze statue of Santa Claus holding aloft an enormous butt plug, and what’s more is actually proud to display the thing in public”
