Down-on-his-luck artist Scott Burroughs is unexpectedly offered a spare seat on the Bateman family’s private jet as he returns to New York from Martha’s Vineyard. However, just minutes after take-off, the plane crashes into the ocean and of the eight passengers and three crew, only Scott and the Batemans’ small son, JJ, are left alive.
David Bateman was CEO of a populist TV news channel and because of that and the miraculous way in which the rescue took place – means that Scott is going to have to get used to being in the news. He and the young boy JJ who has now been orphaned are hounded by everyone who wants a good story – what exactly happened on that plane and how did the two of them survive?

This is the most captivating part of the book – the crash and the search and rescue as Scott has over 10 miles to swim to safety. It’s a frightening and scary time. Heart stopping moments. Raw and wild.
This is a search for the truth – a search for the black box and flight records, the way in which the journalists and FBI search, scour and hunt down the survivors and answers for every single question on their lips. Searches into the past of those on board. But what comes out of the wreckage might be a version of the truth so distorted, who knows what the truth really looks like?
