A British drama student, in New York without a green card, Claire takes the only job she can get: working for a firm of divorce lawyers, posing as an easy pick-up in hotel bars to entrap straying husbands.
When one of her targets becomes the subject of a murder investigation, the police ask Claire to use her acting skills to help lure their suspect into a confession. But right from the start, she has doubts about the part she’s being asked to play. Is Patrick Fogler really a killer . . . Or the only decent husband she’s ever met? And is there more to this set-up than she’s being told?
And that’s when Claire realises she’s playing the deadliest role of her life . .
The city doesn’t sleep at all in this book. There’s a few hotels which play a role in the book but you wouldn’t want to go to the hotels with these characters or in this situation!
Starting with the famous actors studio where Claire enrolls, she gets to know the city really well by all the places she has to visit in the book. She explores the theatres of the city.
“Times Square is a riot of electricity and colour. A single mime artists, braving the cold, entertains a ticket line.”
Once inside the theatres, though there are plenty of staging scenes illustrating castings and the harsh reality of trying to make it to show how the theatre world works in the city. It’s not the theatres though, it’s the bars and clubs which provide the really scary city shadows and view of New York in this thriller!

A very theatrical novel with a lot of drama and goings on behind the scenes. A girl has to do what she can to stay in New York, so that means finding work in a bar and falling into acting as a honey pot only to find that the honey is a LOT more sticky than normal. This honey doesn’t let you go once you’re stuck there..there’s plenty of theatrics in Claire’s life that’s for sure!
It was a quick read, plenty of tension as to what is going to happen.I did find the theatrical snippets throughout the book a bit jarring though and I wasn’t really convinced they added to the plot at all to be honest.
There’s a lot of not knowing what is going on during the story and that’s very apt as Claire and the others don’t know what’s going to happen with the traps. It’s all very cloak and dagger which was fun.
Overall, a good read and an ending that didn’t disappoint.
