2000s: Two men are cast adrift in the Pacific Ocean..
When fishermen Bolivar and Hector set sail from their South American village, they soon find themselves cast adrift in the Pacific Ocean by a sudden storm. As the days pass and no rescue materialises, the two men must come to terms with each other, and with their environment, if they are to survive.
Part gripping survival story, part fearless existential parable, Beyond the Sea is a meditation on what it means to be a man, a friend, a father and a sinner in our fallen world, a powerful and redemptive novel from a master of lyrical prose.
This is a haunting tale of survival in every sense of the word. Two men in a small fishing boat sail out into the ocean but soon find themselves stranded and with nothing but each other to try and survive. The hostile environment is raw and wild, unforgiving and bleak. They seem to have no chance. From this, their relationship and how they relate to each other will determine how and if they survive.
Bolivar and Hector have to depend on their fishing boat for business and getting food for their families. This is a place where people live of the earth and their wits. When they are stuck in a storm in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, there looks to be no escape. Hours at sea turn to days, days turn to weeks and weeks turn to months. Suddenly time is unimportant – it’s the here and now that matters. Time to reflect on past mistakes and past events, people that have come before.
