1969: The summer of love lingers in London….
Gilda is consumed by the mistakes of her past. She walked out on her beloved son Reuben when he was just a boy and fears he’ll never forgive her. Yet she hopes desperately they can mend their shattered relationship.
When Reuben marries a petite blonde gentile, Gilda takes it as the ultimate rejection. Her cold, distant son seems transformed by love – a love she’s craved his entire adult life. What does his new wife have that she doesn’t? It’s an obsession that will bring shocking truths about the past to light . . .
“I picture the past as sort of Rolodex with thousands of life events marked out on cards. I didn’t pay attention when the cards were filed and now they’re all in a mess. I need to flick back through and find the cards responsible , then maybe I can sort them out and fix the error I’ve made”
This is a novel of a London where tea dances and traditions are still very much in existence. There’s visits to the Lyon’s Tea House, fear of the war, annoyance at the rations and gathering around the radio when there’s news of war:
“Yesterday morning at 2.41am at Headquarters, Genera Jodl, the representative of the German High Command, and Grand Admiral Doenitz, the designated head of the German State, signed the act of unconditonal surrender”
