The field of Black Eyed Susans are something that Tessa Cartwright can never get out of her mind. She was left to die in a field full of them when she was only 16 years old, and she blocked almost everything out of her mind apart from those flowers. She went blind for a time, haunted by past memories.
She was the only survivor of the so called “Black-Eyed Susan,” murders and when she was able to give evidence a man was put on death row. A man who now is about to be executed.
More than 20 years have passed. But back then she had the niggling doubt that they’d got the wrong man so when asked to help reexamine the case will she say yes?
When a bunch of Black Eyed Susan’s appear outside her home, she knows the answer.
A field in Texas full of Black eyed Susan flowers. Bright yellow flowers might seem pretty but these flowers hold a dark secret – as dark as their black centres. A girl found amongst victims of a serial killer, with human bones beside her hidden in the tall and bushy plants. Hidden from view. hidden in what should have been a nice place.
An experience so horrific that 30 years later Tessie is still reeling from what happened back then. Her mind blanked out most of it, but not the legacy of what it left her with.
Her mind takes her back to that place of fear, and the feeling that someone else was alive with her, at least at the start. She remembers the flowers but nothing else, not the killer’s face of anything else yet she fears the man now on death row might not be the guilty one. She still doesn’t feel safe and the psychological trauma is evident.
And those flowers, have just appeared in her garden, freshly planted –
The eerie setting and strange surroundings are added to with Lydia, Tessie’s rock until she also seems to vanish. Just another mystery and unexplained even in Tessie’s life. And a very old and creepy house….
And what is it about those flowers? This is the world of forensics as the experts try to find evidence of what went on in that field. What is mitochondrial DNA and could it help solve the case? This is the world of fascinating forensics as the experts try to identify the Susans and the man who made a scene of beauty one of absolute horror.
You will never look at Black Eyed Susans in the same way again.
