2000s: A journey into the heart (and soul) of life in a French auberge
Sir Edward Heath’s Private Secretary Eugene Barter just couldn’t take retirement sitting down. So along with her sister and brother-in-law, she moved to a house in the foothills of the Pyrenees to start an auberge.
This is her story of when a whole new adventure in her life began…
Eugene takes us on a journey, her journey through the countryside and its people, Catalans and French alike, with a few English and German guests in for good measure.
“..directed us to the Rousillon which was, we discovered, a natural unspoilt region of France, little-known and only tentatively explored with a lush vine-growing plain extending from the snow-capped Pyrenees to the dark, red coastline of the Mediterranean.”
The second half of the book focuses on the recipes with which Eugene used to feed her guests so you can cook and taste the book’s setting as well as reading it.
