A headless body is found in Mersea and so starts the new case for DI Nick Lowry. But this is not what he or any of his colleagues believes it to be. There are a series of incidents of a dubious nature which don’t turn out to be what they first appear. But they do seem to be connected so the police are at pains to discover what that is before it’s too late. Some of the incidents involve members of the armed forces and so the consequences of this could be far reaching.
Working in the police must be hard on any level but this is the 1980s and so police technics are not what they are today. The sense of time and place is evoked with grey pencil of various shades. It’s as if they’re stuck in a time and place long buried and where the police concentrate on the investigation and good old fashioned detective work instead of the targets and DNA we hear so much about now.
This is quite a nostalgic trip back to the 1980s. Spotting the food and cultural references from that time is fun but it also really helps to evoke the time and place as well as the social and political opinions of the time.
Colchester is a town known for its army and garrisons so the city is awash with military tension and the culture of soldiers wandering around the town who become a target.
