“Easingham crouched in a gentle green valley surrounded by pit villages. Between Sunderland and Durham but leaning towards the coast, the market town met at the confluence of the river Nutilis, a tributary of the Wear, its name taken from the latin inutilis ,meaning useless as it wasn’t strong enough to power a mill, sustain fish or create fertile floodplains. The mines were shut, the once busy wagon works had long since closed and the idle docks had become a hunting ground for punters looking for low class prostitutes. Hugged by the woods, the town was now mainly industrial, relying on trade from London and overseas. Spilt into four wards and severed in half by the A19, it was early reached from Durham, Newcastle and Sunderland.”
