Spain is corrupt and on the brink of collapse. People congregate in the tunnels beneath the streets as above riots, and disturbances of all kinds take place. Banks are closing, hospitals are in chaos, homes are lost and rightwing thugs patrol the street.
Even the police are not immune from changes for the worst – and cuts are being made– who will go, Cámara or his friend Torres? As they investigate the suicide of an ex- bank clerk and the brutal murder of a young American woman, the city continues to erupt around them.

The King was a friendly and popular man – the bet asset that ‘the Spain brand’. As the king is dying however and the funeral planned, there is a Republican demonstration also planned and some tens of thousands are expected. But for the moment, in the centre of the city, there is a speech by the mayoress beside the glorious cathedral and the cobbled streets in and around the old town show the character of the city when war is not present.
The old police HQ stands on Gran Via de Fernando de Catolic and its described as a sci-fi building which was impractical and too expensive to maintain. It had been built to be an art gallery and not a police station. However, the Valencia architect Jaume Montesa is mentioned as having won awards for his other buildings
The earth below the city is notoriously wet and soft as its the product of Moorish irrigation waters – still course beneath the tarmac and concrete and of course there is a danger of flooding.
