Mark Shillingford’s twin sister is a an accomplished and successful jockey and he, as a race caller, is more than sure that she has this next race all tied up.
So when she comes in second, he’s convinced that the race was fixed. When he has it out with her, she gets annoyed and storms off. It’s the last time he sees her alive
Hours later, Clare jumps to her death from the balcony of a London hotel . . . or so it seems.
Tour the horse racing world via this novel!
Whatever you knowledge or interest in the world of racing, this is set up in this novel as a clever almost locked room premise where the enclosures of the racing track provide the ideal scene setting. The characters are a mix of trainers, jockeys and other officials from the world of racing, and of course the horses themselves. You can feel and see them breathe in the frosty environment, feel their hearts beating as they pound the tracks and feel the excitement and the power that this sport attracts. But with any world of glamour, it’s the behind the scenes action that really draws you in.
Mark’ sister Clare, is a successful jockey and it’s during a race at Lingfield, when Mark becomes suspicious of Clare’s performance which is more than a bit under par. They argue and she leaves as she has a race at Newmarket the next day and so wants to ready herself for that. She of course never makes it.
