Willie Bodega is king. Need college tuition for your daughter? Start-up funds for your fruit stand? Bodega can help. He gives everyone a leg up, in exchange only for loyalty–and a steady income from the drugs he pushes.Lyrical, inspired, and darkly funny, this powerful debut novel brilliantly evokes the trial of Chino, a smart, promising young man to whom Bodega turns for a favor. Chino is drawn to Bodega’s street-smart idealism, but soon finds himself over his head, navigating an underworld of switchblade tempers, turncoat morality, and murder.
This is a unique and very Latino populated area of New York City. It’s also known as Harlem and El Barrio, stretching fom the Upper East Side and East 96th Street up to around East 142nd Street[3][4] east of Fifth Avenue to the East and Harlem Rivers.
A Latino district mostly populated by Puerto Ricans, Dominican, Cuban and Mexican immigrants. This is now the area which also covers what people used to refer to as Italian Harlem. The area suffers issues of social depravation but as in the novel, it’s well known for its musical influence such as Latin freestyle and salsa music.
