The deathbed confessions of Father Sebastián Lacroix – a Jesuit in Chile. He paints a disturbing and chilling picture of Pinochet’s Chile
As he is introduced to Chile’s literary elite he then becomes involved in the secret association known as Opus Dei and is both persecuted by them and the Church.
Not so much a booktrail but a trail around the mind and a man’s dying thoughts. It is however a booktrail of sort around the landscape – political and otherwise of a country in turmoil.
This is a well traveled religious man however who travel extensively in Chile and Europe visiting many churches. It’s interesting to travel with him and to see the various religious people and themes of each country.
It’s during the course of a single night that Father Sebastian Urrutia Lacroix, a Chilean priest and a member of Opus Dei, imagines and remembers both real and imaginary characters as if in a scene from a horror film.
There are a range of characters, real and fictional who we meet along the way such as the poet Pablo Neruda, the German writer Ernst Junger and General Pinochet. The turbulence and political intrigue of the landscape at tat time is well evoked and really starts to reveal the reality of Chile and its political landscape in all its horrific glory.
Chile is, both in the dream and without, a country in turmoil and the priest takes us on a journey around his country and in deed via others to show the Chilean literary scene , the political one and the life of his people.
As well as Chile, the priest does venture out to places such as Italy and Spain – Pistoia and Rome, Italy, Navarre, Spain as well a small tour across South America itself.
