Cabbagetown is a neighbourhood in the East end of Toronto. on the eve of the great depression, teenagers are leaving school, finding paltry jobs, and attending parties. People are trying to drink their way out of financial hardship and many are struggling with the poltical changes of the time
But meanwhile, one cynical social climber becomes a government clerk.
To walk around Cabbagetown now is to walk around a nice gentrified and picturesque area but this book tells you the real story and the history of it – how it was little more than a slum during the Depression
The novel opens on the eve of the Great Depression and we see its effect on the people who live through it. the crash of the stock market affect many if not all and whilst some of them manage to find ways to survive that are legal, others don’t and the crime rate does go up.
this is the side of Toronto we were shocked to read about as to walk around this part of town is pleasant and you cannot imagine what went on there during those difficult years. It is particularly fascinating to see present day places in an historical setting and to take this book with you, its almost like holding a sepia photo of the past in front of you as you go.
The people we meet here may not be the kind you would want to live beside but its like a human study in a place that has turned on them – what was a nice place to live is now a desperate one and a slum at that and desperate times call for desperate measures.
An interesting insight into Cabbagetown’s history and the social and human side of the economic abyss.
