2000s: Someone is killing people according to the city’s myths
People are being murdered in Girona. People who some might say deserve a taste of their own medicine – a loan shark, a corrupt priest and thugs who have blighted the streets of the old quarter. There’s something very deliberate about who is being targeted and the way their bodies are posed after death.
Elisenda Domènech, the head of the city’s newly-formed Serious Crime Unit, is determined to do all she can to stop the attacks. She believes the attacker is drawing on the city’s legends to choose his targets, but no one else seems to believe her.
She has more than a battle on her hands – for then the attacks start to include less deserving victims
Just what is happening in Girona?
The Virgin of Good Death. Such an overwhelming name for such a small statue. Standing in her narrow niche between the ancient stone towers of the Portal de Sobreportes, high above the slender cobbled streets below, she had in medieval times been the last sight that condemned prisoners had of the city
This is a guide to the Catalan city of Girona, and so much more. As well as a feel for the city’s cobbled streets and gothic buildings, the history and the mythology of the city are evoked with chilling undertones.
This is a city of contradictions, of past and present merged into one – the tensions between the Catalan and Spanish languages, cultures and identities.
a city where the line between right and wrong, the moral tightrope, is a delicate place to tread.
