2000s: Bending the rules can have serious consequences…
Geraldine Steel is back for her tenth case. Reunited in York with her former sergeant, Ian Peterson, she discovers that her tendency to bend the rules has consequences. The tables have turned, and now he’s the boss.
When two people are murdered, their only connection lies buried in the past. As police search for the elusive killer, another body is discovered. Pursuing her first investigation in York, Geraldine Steel struggles to solve the confusing case. How can she expose the killer, and rescue her shattered reputation, when all the witnesses are being murdered?
Quite a change in location for Geraldine Steele! Instead of the bright lights and chaos of the capital, she’s now working in York, and she’s now working for her former colleague and junior Ian Peterson. Changes in every sense of the word.
York provides an interesting backdrop to this change of pace. It’s quieter and smaller than the capital of course yet the narrow streets and unknown territory lend themselves well to a search for a killer.
Geraldine is doing her best to get used to the idea of moving to York, It;s a forced move but she likes her a rented apartment on line as it’s close to the River Ouse and is in prime location in the city with lovely views. Sadly, the weather and temperatures north of London seem to be a lot worse. She also often underestimates the volume of traffic in the city of York and is often late to meetings and where she has to be.
The city acts as a good background – a new place to navigate, a sense of displacement, a place where Geraldine is an outsider in every sense of the word. A city to explore however for the readers…
