What you need to know before your trail

Jo Edmond finds herself in a bit of a situation when her husband runs off with another woman. She’s left all alone with her young baby as the nanny turned out to be the other woman! So, in a moment of..madness, clarity, seizing the day whatever you want to call it, she buys the rather run down guest house, Kirkton Hall. The hotel opens at the start of the famous local Fair Week – a 300 year old Gypsy tradition. It’s not a favourite with the locals but there’s something or someone that catches Jo’s eye…

Travel Guide

Kirkton Hall and the village of Kirtkton Sowerby is fictional and could be based on the village of Sowerby. But because of the Gypsy fair link, we’ve had a look at the village of Appleby in the lake district as this is renowned for the very same thing – a huge fair each year where travellers come from miles around.

In the story, fair week is THE event of the year. For a small village and its smaller community, it’s a big change to their everyday way of life. The new guesthouse is a new beginning for Jo, who has turned  her life around in a lovely country setting.

The Cumbrian countryside, life in the 1980′s and the magic and buzz of the fair  – you can hear the singing, the bustle of the crowds and immerses you in the travelling way of life, what goes on a horse fair and of course a lovely country hotel that you’ll want to visit in the real world.
