2000s: Two sisters, separated by birth but drawn together by a tragic fate
Connie and Jeanette are sisters. Connie was adopted after having been abandoned for a stranger to find. Jeanette was the young girl already in the family who took her in. The two sisters are polar opposites with one dark, the other of a more sunny disposition. Jeanette is also deaf so leads a very different life to what Connie wants for herself.
They both fall in love with a man called Bill – Jeanette’s later husband and Connie struggles with her feelings and reactions to them. A new life in Bali takes her away from London where the bitterness is still fresh between them. But then Connie gets a message- Jeanette is ill and it’s terminal.
Can Connie go back and face up to things before it’s too late?
Constance’s life in Bali is one of escape and music. She is an artist and has created a new life for herself far from the complexity of growing up with a sister who was deaf and which Connie found an extra barrier to communication.
Once in Bali, the country comes alive with the music:
“Nights on the island were rarely silent”
“The guttural scraping and grunting and booming that was the frog chorus could rise into a din sufficient to drown out all the other wildlife”
This is a city where the sky goes from pitch black to a vast grey where the animals mix with the people in the streets and where banana palms flutter n the breeze just outside your bedroom window. For Constance, even the sound of trickling water is like ‘Liquid music’ She works in her studio and has a pard down calm and minimal life which is just what she needs before her world falls apart when news of her sister’s illness reaches her.
Jeanette is the only family left that she will ever know and so the race to London to overcome the bitterness which has lasted for years is a poignant one.
