2000s: A murder takes place in a psychiatric ward…
Cordi is fighting depression in a Toronto psychiatric ward, but when a patient dies, she is convinced that it was murder. But is she really in the best place for someone to believe her?
Cordi has been admitted due to her depression and she is being treated in many ways but it’s not likely that something like this is going to be believe, particularly when everyone knows why you’re there and that your mind is not working as it should be.
How do you prove what you suspect? And who on earth in this asylum could be responsible and why?
A Toronto psychiatric ward
“If you have ever walked down a long hospital corridor then you know the fear and dread it can inspire, as well as the hope”
One sentence which perfectly sums up the atmosphere of the novel and the uncertainty of the kind of hospital ward for the patients in the novel. Some call it a mental ward and in the past these people might have been in an asylum. Issues of mental health and the fear you must feel inside one of these places is evoked with every worked and every chill in the corridor.
Even the landscape in Toronto takes on this tone:
The black naked trees particularly lit by strategically placed street lamps.
It always made me feel lonely, this bridge spanning a wooded ravine, The place was eerie, timeless. Especially at night with the old fashioned, street lights casting their glow in the darkness
The funky stores and the homeless to be found here in the novel
