A journey across the fourth century B.C
A journey across the fourth century B.C
Vidal’s historical novel set in the 5th century BC and narrated by Cyrus Spitama, son of a Persian prince and Greek sorceress, grandson of the prophet Zoroaster, and ambassador to the courts of India, China and Greece. Pericles, Thucydides, Sophocles and Confucius are among the book’s characters.
This is a journey not only in to the past but a journey of epic length and scope
Creation is in fact a journey across the fourth century B.C as viewed by Cyrus Spitama, a Persian diplomat and the grandson of Zoroaster. There is a lot of Greek politics and history involved and even “harem politics”, but it’s thrilling to see former lands of Cathay and Persia come to life as well as countries we recognise today.
The memoirs and recollections of a Persian diplomat is a fascinating journey in itself – how he meets Zoroaster, Anaximander, Pericles, Socrates, the Buddha, Confucius, Xerxes, Darius, and Lao Tsi to name but a few.
All of these figures (with the exception of Zoroaster) did live within roughly the same time frame, the 5th century BC. A time traveller’s dream.
