What you need to know before your trail

Cuddies Strip is based on a true crime and faithfully follows the investigation and subsequent trial but it also examines the mores of the times and the insensitive treatment of women in a male-dominated society.

It is a highly absorbing period piece from 1930s Scotland, with strong contemporary resonances: both about the nature and responsiveness of police services and the ingrained misogyny of the whole criminal justice system.

Travel Guide

True crime from 1930s Perth

The novel looks at the awful and sadly true crime that gripped Perth nearly 100 years ago. It looks at the death of an 18-year-old boy and the rape of a 17-year-old girl in the 1930s on the outskirts of the Scottish city.

Cuddies Strip is the name of a remote lover’s lane just south of Moncreiffe.

This is an imagined retelling of the investigation and subsequent trial. It’s also a look and examination of the society at the time – how life was tough for women and how much society was male-dominated to the point that women really did have little choice in many aspects of life. When it came to justice and the legal system, then, this case highlighted grave shortcomings.
