A six day cruise to New York, across the Atlantic might sound like a nice time to relax and think about your journey and where you are going. However for Violet Hetherington, this is a rather rash decision for she is going to visit Edwin, an old friend and this journey is going to open old wounds as to why the two lost touch in the first place.
Events which led to her losing her job, her career as a poet and settling for another life altogether.
The time she spends on the ship however will be a time she will never forget nor the people she will meet.
A transatlantic crossing – six days of meeting people and enjoying the sense of freedom and remoteness that you can only get far out in the middle of the ocean.
The Ship
If you have ever been on a cruise or not, this book takes you there, sits you in the cabin with a balcony with Vi and immerses you in the whole cruising experience. There’s the clinking of china and cutlery in the dining hall, the atmosphere and the noises of the waters around you and the sense of calm contrasting with the excited chatter of the passengers.
The sense of isolation, a kind of closed and protected environment is very apartment and so the scenery is not so much the ocean as the fellow passengers on the ship. As the ship sails along, the stories of Vi’s past come to light and the back story sprays its unhappy memories like the swell on the ship. Fellow passengers with their own input into her story tell their tale but the one destination she is waiting for is Edwin and New York.
New York
There are only a few chapters at the end of the story centered in New York but this is the destination of the journey in more ways than one.
