Many of the Gilver family have come down a whole host of illnesses from pneumonia to influenza. Everyone needs a change of air and a spa break in the lovely border town of Moffat seems ideal
Moffat offers magic and relaxation or so it says- people from all over Scotland and beyond head here to drink the sulfurous waters straight from the well and to soak up the benefits of the Laidlaw Hydropathic Hotel.
But there’s not much rest and relaxation going on here for the Laidlaw family

The ghosts of Moffat do include the Haunted Ram and have been documented in many sources in history.
The well is real but Yellow Mary isn’t – or at least she’s not recorded in history but just in the author’s mind.
The Moffat Hydro was real until it was burned down in 1921 but for the sake of the novel, it’s lifespan and spooky history has been extended.
