Byron and San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice,

In 1816, Byron visited San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice, where he acquainted himself with Armenian culture with the help of the monks belonging to the Mechitarist Order. This is the place in Venice most associated with Byron and its  where he lived with a small community of monks. He learned Armenian here and participated in the publication of an English-Armenian dictionary.

Bridge of Sighs

This is the bridge which connects DogesPalace to the prisons. Whilst crossing the bridge he invented the name that made it famous all over the world, the bridge of Sighs, because of the sighs that those condemned would release on seeing Venice and freedom for the last time.

Booktrailer Review

Brilliant.

I am finding out so much about Lord Byron reading fiction! First there was his association with Mary Shelley and his illegimate child with her sister in Clairmont by Lesley McDowell and now this brilliant book.

Here. Lord Byron and that gothic world he inhabited is brought to delicious and dangerous life by Essie Fox. When the Queen of Gothic fiction brings Byron back to life with a story about vampires and dead prostitutes, you are on to a winner. Some is real and some is fiction, but Essie’s clever mind merges both so you are utterly captivated.

The book brings the man back to life and conjures up the world in which he lived. His love life was something else! What this book does brilliantly however is showcase when two titans of gothicness come together. Poems as signposts in a novel? Byron brilliance wrapped up in dangerous devilry and murder? Even better.

April can’t come soon enough when this is released! HB is in the bag!
