Karou is a young art student living in Prague. She spends her time drawing elaborate creatures, demons and winged creatures but these aren’t the creatures of her imagination but those she has known for some time. Karou has a secret life where she is summoned by a beast called Brimstone who has been somewhat of a father figure to her for most if not all of her life.
Some of the errands she is set on involve strange requests such as teeth-collecting but she does it all without complaining until her life and the one she escapes into begin to merge…
The falling snow and the early hour conspired to paint Prague ghostly , like a tintype photograph, all silver and haze.
The setting might be Prague but this isn’t the Prague you will see if you keep your eyes open for its when you close your eyes and imagine all of the scenes in the book then that’s when the real setting shines.
This is a book of numerous settings and two very different worlds – the real and the ‘other’ secret one, the every day and the underground series of challenges which takes Karou as far afield as Marrakech and Paris in the search for what ever Brimstone requires of her this time.
In Marrakech – this is where she meets the enigmatic and haunting Akiva and the Romeo and Juliet story with a difference starts to unfurl its wings.
This is the life she hides from her friends at school. But the day black handprints start appearing on doorways across the world is the day the worlds not only merge but clash.
A battle of angels and demons over the most gothic styled city of them all? Prague is THE setting for this novel and enhances every detail of the imaginative story the novel takes you on.
