1939:Will the tides of time bring two people together again on a Hebridian island?
It is 1939 and the eve of the Second World War when the handsome sailor Ewan Mackinnon returns to his childhood home on the remote Hebridean island of Phetray. He was forced to run from the ignominy of a terrible event, the disgraced Minister’s son. Arriving home, many years later, he is reunited with Minn Macfee, a cottar’s daughter, instantly falling for her graceful beauty and enchanting voice.
But Minn and Ewan are bound by the same misfortune that caused their separation in childhood. When Ewan joins the Special Boat Squadron and embarks for France, leaving Minn behind, it seems fate has intervened once more.
Touched by tragedy and the weight of the past, their love seems destined to die. Or will the tides of time bring them together again?
The author has created a fictional name for a very real island – Tiree which is in the Inner Hebrides. The author says in her note in the book that she has taken the scenery and the feel of the island and created her own place from it. None of the history or people in the book are based on the real island’s. Equally, Phetray is populated by fictional people and the wartime events are of her own making.
There is a real strong sense of place despite it being fictional – of an island community during wartime. The talk of weather, of the boats coming in and the fishing industry are just some of the very particular island themes in the book
The use of Scottish songs, vernacular and words are what helps to place this novel even more firmly in the Scottish landscape. There’s a helpful glossary at the end of the novel.
