Following the tragic events of 9/11, Ronnie Wilson from Brighton sees the chance to rescue his failing life and to reinvent himself by escaping to a new country and starting again.
Meanwhile, a woman gets inside a life before becoming horrified when the lift suddenly plummets downwards.
Detective Superintendent Roy Grace comes onto the horrific scene of a woman’s body found in a drain. This investigation is going to span the globe and take him into new territory.
This novel takes Roy Grace into some new and dangerous territory. A case in Brighton has links with New York and the tension is heightened since the days and in fact years following the horrific 9/11 have lasting consequences for all concerned. The thread of the mystery might takes place in Brighton, New York and to a small town in Australia and the twists and turns of what seems to be a rather straight forward case turns out to be anything but. It’s always interesting to see Roy Grace about of his comfort zone and these international cases and investigations which involve so much more than you would expect the Brighton police to have to deal with are that much more tense. Locations and timelines jump around causing confusion, tension and suspense. Short chapters help to switch the action from one place to another, one person to another. That’s if the scary thought of what you would do had you been in that lift not kill you.
Imagine using the 9/11 tragedy to help yourself and disguise your own identity, pretending you’re dead so you can start again. What about what Ronnie, the man who does this, has left behind in Brighton? The links between the various threads all start to link up and with such various locations and cases involved, this proves to be very interesting and topical at the same time.
Watch out for the closing line of the book….
