What you need to know before your trail

A small town in the Dordogne area of France should be a lovely day for a stroll around the market. But the locals are fearful as inspectors from the EU are expected and are going to carry out a surprise visit and look at the levels of hygiene, enforcing the rather un polpular and bureaucratic rules from Brussels if they have to.

It’s not going to be a nice day at the market for Captain Bruno Courrèges either. As St Denis’ Chief of Police, he finds himself in charge of the investigation when a man from a local immigrant North African family, is found viciously murdered.

Its motive appears to be hidden deep inside France’s divisive war-time past.

Travel Guide

Welcome to St Denis:

“The town emerged from the lush green of the trees and meadows like a tumbled heap of treasure;the golden stone of the buildings, the ruby red tiles of the rooftops and the silver curve of the river running through it”

Whilst St Denis is fictional, the author says that it is based on many a town in and around the Dordorgne area. The towns of Sarlat, Bergeraac and Belves are particular inspirations. However smaller towns such as St Cyprien, Sainte Alvere, Tremolat and Le Buisson. The Mairie the war memorial come from one town and Bruno’s world is one where the cafes, the war memorial and the local market make up the very essence of small town France, Bruno’s world is also made up of small town politics mixed with large scale indiscretions.

Bruno often reminisces about his time in the region and how he remembers the one of three locations he’s ever worn his gun – one was when he stopped to see the celebrated cave paintings of Lascaux.
