2023: There’s a new bookseller at the bookstore.
Roach – bookseller, loner and true crime obsessive – is not interested in making friends. She has all the company she needs in her serial killer books, murder podcasts and her pet snail, Bleep.
That is, until Laura joins the bookshop.
Smelling of roses, with her cute literary tote bags and beautiful poetry, she’s everyone’s new favourite bookseller. But beneath the shiny veneer, Roach senses a darkness within Laura, the same darkness Roach possesses.
As Roach’s curiosity blooms into morbid obsession, it becomes clear that she is prepared to infiltrate Laura’s life at any cost.
London and Walthamstow
The bookshop in the novel is fictional but is in the very special area of London known as Walthamstow Village which is infact a suburb of the capital.
It’s about books and bookshops.
“Bookshops have always felt like home. There were two independant shops in the high street when I was little. My mother and I called them ‘the Marble Shop’ and the Grown-up’ shop. The Grown-up whop was a general bookshop specialising in adult fiction and non- fiction alike. It was very beige – popcorn coloured walls, a light biscuity carpet. All I knew then was that it was boring, full of adult books with dull covers and that the marble shop was magical, a treasure trove of joy and colour. It sold children’s books and toys, and the wall were painted a Cadbury’s purple and the bookcases were an electric orange, the cartoony palette of Nickelodeon.’
