2000s: A grouse party ends in more than a bird being killed…
Local policeman Hamish is not too happy when Priscilla Halburton-Smythe brings her London playwright fiancé home to Lochdubh. He’s rather taken with her and so feels as if his nose has been pushed out of joint since her fiance could not be more different than him.
The engagement party looks set to be uneventful – well that’s until vile, boorish Captain Bartlett, one of the guests at Priscilla’s engagement party, has just been found murdered . A grouse hunt has gone very very bad or is this an elaborate attempt to cover up a murder? There are so many titled party guests at the event but are all prime suspects and each one seems to have their own reasons for shooting more than the birds.
It’s up to local bobby Hamish to find the fox in the hen house…
The village contains a range of wild and wonderful characters. Nothing ordinary about this village community! There’s the villagers themselves, the localswho have lived here for years, the uppity landed gentry, game poachers, and the clash of the classes, village life is never dull. Jolly hockeysticks and all that – a murder at a weekend estate party – now who could have done that?
Constable Hamish Macbeth lives in the fictitious town of Lochdubh in Sutherland, Scotland
“The Village of Lochdubh in Sutherland looked like a picture postcard with its row of small eighteenth-century whitewashed cottages facing the sea loch”
The series was filmed on location in the village of Plockton, the town of Kyle of Lochalsh and the surrounding area. The booktrail is a mix of the two.
Sutherland is located at the highest point of the Highlands. It’s a region noted for its jewel in the crown which is the fantastic Dunrobin Castle – now this made us think of the estate party going on in this novel and well you can imagine grouse on the menu here!
