This is quite the ride around Florida! From Tampa to Miami via The Everglades and quite a few motels and dodgy car parks inbetween!
Lori sure knows her way around the state of Florida and it’s just as well as she’s kidnapped at one point and taken somewhere in a van so with her good sense of direction it’s not long before she’s back on the road and in control.
Much of the novel is set on the road between Madison, fictional Missingdon which is a blink and you’ll miss it kind of town we are told, settled between Waukeenah and Hampton Springs. So small, in fact it’s not on any real map, but drive along the highway here and read the book and you’ll see why it’s not there.
Everglades
Such an iconic setting for any book and particularly apt for a trail into the unknown. When Lori is here, there’s a great sense of adventure, speed and a hunt for the truth and it all gets very hairy. Good thing is you can take a boat yourself and imagine you’re Lori. Minus the threats and the fear of course. Still watch out for the crocodiles though!
Lori’s memories of this place are somewhat more chilling than most:
“Despite the humidity, I feel a chill my spine and shiver. Memories whirl in my mind: Daokta screaming; JT out cold; a sinking boat,a rifle butt jabbed into y ribs; blood in the water as gators feast of human bodies.”
The last time I visited the Everglades I damn near died.”
This is one of the most exciting parts of the Lori experience though – bombing through the glades on a boat dodging the crocs in the water and the equally nasty crocs of the human variety on dry land.
