What you need to know before your trail

Botswana – The safari was billed as the last really wild place on earth and promises made that the trip would be a good one, never to forget.

Millie and boyfriend Richard to on the tour – Richard was particularly keen and this was his dream so Millie went along as, well it wasn’t the first time she’d made a sacrifice or change for him. But this time, she may have made the worst decision ever.

Boston – Six years later and Detective Jane Rizzoli together with forensic pathologist Maura Isles are working on the case of a man found hanging in a home filled with the animals he used to stuff and mount as his job, When another murder takes place, then another, are the police on the trail of some sick ‘Safari Killer’?

Travel Guide

Botswana

The Safari sounds great on paper – a journey into the wilderness an the deep heart of  the jungle  and the Okavango Delta of Botswana. Imagine the feeling of sleeping under the stars in such a fantastic environment? With the sound of the jungle all around, the wildlife only yards away:

“There are no roads out here, only  a faint flattening of the grass where the passage of earlier tires had compacted the poor soil. The damaged caused by a  single ruck can scar the landscape for months..”

This however soon becomes a nightmare as the wildlife takes its hostages, killing the hired tracker. The party can only stay there, like the prey that they are, stranded and waiting to see who will be next.

“..as I emerge from our tent…‘lone footprints catches my eye. I crouch down beside it and feel a sudden chill when I realise that only a thin layer of canvas shielded us while we slept.”

Millie narrates this part of the tale and her insight into each scary minute raises te tension and the eerily chilling beating of your heart.
And the advice for surviving the trip?

“Face them straight on. And what ever you do , don’t run, You’ll have a better chance of surviving”

Boston

The animal link takes on another chilling tone as the murder of a taxidermist. The hunter becomes the hunted and the walls are covered with his prize takings – animals heads, pelts and bodies. He was working in the world of big cats and was preparing a rare snow leopard that had to be euthanized at the local zoo. The argument of animal lovers and those utterly opposed to hunting and taxidermy of any kind.

The man’s connections to that Botswana trip lead the detectives to detailing some gruesome and graphic descriptions of finding and examining bodies you have ever read. The fact that this killer has now come to Boston – to track the one that got away in Botswana? – involves having to hunt the hunter himself.

Booktrailer Review

Susan @thebooktrailer

This is one of several Gerritsen books I’ve read now and remind me never to go camping or on a safari if she is around! I’ve never been quite as terrified before since I read this in silence at night and whilst granted there were no lions or such like nearby, the wind was howling outside and  I started to imagine the passing shadows of pigeons as something much more sinister!

The idea that a safari could go so wrong was really intriguing and there’s a lot that my imagination did to fill in the gaps and to go on on its own tangent if I’m honest. Tess writes some gripping and very gorey stuff but if you’re not due to go camping in any way you should read this to get the pulse going. I really enjoy the pace of her writing and her powerful images she creates and this for me is another reason to get this one as it just seemed very different to other books out there at the moment.
