Dulci Oyselle is a 13-year-old girl living on Cape Breton Island and is due to go to high school. She’s a bit nervous but excited about what awaits her. So when she joins a Celtic music club and is asked out by the cute new junior should mean that things are off to a good start, but then things start to get a little strange.
She starts having visions – well she thinks they’re visions as she can see a man wailing in the snow, the body of a Mi’kmaq Indian girl and in strange places too such as in her house and on the school playing field.Strange and then dangerous as it turns out that the visions might be trying to alert her to a threat to her best friend’s family.
But how does Dulci start to deal with this?
An island full of folklore and history if this YA novel is anything to go by. Nova Scotia is clearly a character in the novel as is the weather and the subject of how the islanders treat the indigenous peoples and have done across the years. The supernatural elements blend fact and fiction, myth and mysticism into a story where Cape Breton island is the setting for some very atmospheric intrigue indeed.
A place well known for East Coast living and somewhere with a history of stories, tales and an age old curse. Dulci has to not only find out about the visions and what they are trying to tell her, but to go back in time and try to put things right and find out the truth. There are Celtic references galore, references to the history of the island and of course the Celtic charm too.
