Illumbe is the featured fictional coastal town somewhere in the Basque Country.
It is located between winding roads on the edge of cliffs and houses with cracked walls as a result of many a stormy night. This is the home of a small community where, only apparently, no one has secrets from anyone.
Portugalete is on the map as it’s a small town in the Basque Country and where the author was born.
Booktrailer Review
Had the pleasure of reading this recently. Mikel is very well known in his native Spain and only one of his books is out in English? This series should be – starting with El Mentiroso/The Liar.
This was shocking from the start. The Basque Country with its dramatic history is always attractive to me in a novel and this one is no different. Ilumbe might be fictional, but boy, it feels and looks very real. Mikel evokes the setting with style – I had to check it really was fictional!
What I loved about this was the atmosphere! The scene setting – the storms, the cliffs and the rawness of the drama.
The drama – oh the drama! If I woke up with a body beside me and a bloody stone, I would most probably run away. This guy delves into a mystery that could see him dead. Plus there’s a book come from it. Haha. I would not be that brave.
There are TWO more books in this series so I am going to be getting them pretty soon.
