Jerry Dresden has not had an easy life by any stretch of the imagination. He was bullied at school, his little sister is diagnosed with leukemia and then she sadly dies when he is only barely a teenager. If this weren’t bad enough, he also loses his father who works in Hollywood. His mother has her obsessions and he retreats into a world of his own.
This terrible trauma in his early and teenage years leads to him having a dark and unnatural interest in porn and the darker side of sex. He becomes ever more obsessed and the more he becomes addicted, the higher the hit he looks for. The road to hell is right infront of him and he seems hellbent on going hell for leather.
Then he gets an Ephiphany…
Setting – the dark sordid world of sex obsession and porn
Not for the faint hearted by any means of the imagination. The journey you could say features in Jerry’s mind as he gets more and more involved in the sex and porn world
When he is accused of murder, he sets off across the USA towards Mexico in search of a video tape which he hopes will be the key to the case against him falling down. There are travels to Cannes in the South of France, Porto in Portugal and all the while the landscape is one of the absurd and the unimaginable.
Michael writes about the sordid world of Cannes that we don’t get to see on camera – this article in Vice magazine explains his inspiration for the novel
And the story of Joan of Arc – a symbol of women both celebrated and feared. A symbol of the oppressed. The threads of this story weave through the novel.
