2005: Something awful has been found on the island of Samui…
The charred remains of two Europeans have been discovered on the Thai island of Samui. Local Police Chief Charoenkul enlists the reluctant David Braddock, a burnt-out private detective, to assist in an ‘unofficial’ investigation since he’s been sidelined by his superiors.
But Braddock might not be the help the Chief thinks he is – little does he know that he’s involved in an affair with the same Police Chief’s wife …
What on earth is time on the island going to result in?
The author note states that the island of Samui as represented in this book is real but that this is a fictional portrayal of many events and indeed places. The picture of Koh Samui is partly accurate but much of the writing is from the author’s imagination. Wat Son does not exist and neither do the bars and restaurants in the book but you’ll have a lot of fun picking the ones that resemble them!
You might also want to wander down to Bophut police station and there you’ll get a surprise as the architectural eyesore described in the novel is rather nice in real life!
Thailand at the time of the setting of this novel was still recovering from the tsunami of 2004. The national Elections were held in February 2005 and the Chinese New Year on February 8th that year. The humidity and heat in the novel were a reality however as for just over a month the island had less than 4mm fell on Samui and the temperature was in the high 20s with humidity at 80%
