2000s: A female train driver gets stuck in the middle of nowhere
Marie is a mining train driver in northern Quebec, the only woman in a man’s world. One night, during a storm the train comes to a halt and she is forced to leave the train and try and sort out the problem. She has an accident and is rescued by a lone man who comes upon her in the night. He’s a hermit and lives round these parts. He says he will take her to his home – does she have any choice?
It’s when she gets to the house and spends time in its strange walls, that she will find out exactly what kind of place this is, and who the mysterious man might be. More importantly, she will slowly realise what her fate might be and if she will ever leave.
Quebec
The landscape here is some of the most remote ever in a novel. Did you know there are trains that pass through such hostile environments? Imagine driving here on your own. Brrrr.
It’s unbearable to think about what would happen if you did have an accident and were at the mercy of your rescuers. If the weather and cold didn’t kill you first of course.
The snow, the hills, the remoteness and claustrophobia of it all really gets under your skin.
