2000s: Chronicle of a marriage foretold
2000s: Chronicle of a marriage foretold
Neve is a woman in her mid-thirties married to an older man, Edwyn.
To say theirs has been somewhat of a nightmare marriage is an understatement – and so this makes Neve think back over her life and her relationships throughout it. We are taken on a journey from Neve’s childhood to her university life to the present day .
Their past marriage battles have left scars. What were the decisions that led her to this marriage and how much, despite it all, is this a story of love?
This is a London which is just the backdrop to a story of a marriage – a city where each part brings back memories and recollections – memories of her parents flat in Chiswick, her walks to Putney and the journeys from Lime street Station. Now, living in West Brompton Station, life has come full circle.
” I used to look at houses like this one from the train: behind the ivy-coloured embankment, their London brick, sash windows. This was on the Euston approach. The back of this flat – that is, the bedroom, the bathroom and Edwyn’s study – looks out on the overground line, just past West Brompton”
An insight into a marriage. A few images to savour:
‘We walked up to the shops, into the throat of the wind.”
“The candle was lit, flying its pale flag, and in the row of houses opposite, all the windows were dark. All our little theatres.”
