2000s: What if the one piece missing from your life is currently five hundred miles away?
2000s: What if the one piece missing from your life is currently five hundred miles away?
Lissa loves her job as a nurse, but recently she’s been doing a better job of looking after other people than looking after herself. After a traumatic incident at work leaves her feeling overwhelmed, she agrees to swap lives with someone in a quiet village in Scotland.
Cormac is restless. Just out of the army, he’s desperately in need of distraction, and there’s precious little of it in Kirrinfief. Maybe three months in London is just what he needs.
As Lissa and Cormac warm to their new lives, emailing back and forth about anything and everything, finally things seem to be falling into place. But each of them feel there’s still a piece missing. What – or who – could it be?
And what if it’s currently five hundred miles away?
Kirrinfief (Scottish Highlands)
What two places could be more different? When London life gets too much, you might be tempted to go rural and you can’t get more rural than a village on the banks of Loch Ness!
Kirrinfief might be fictional but it’s so vividly drawn you would think it were real. There are many villages on the banks of the loch which Jenny could have been inspired by. Be sure to visit Fort Augustus with the barges! This definately has the same feel as the village in the book. Scottish charm and hospitality at its best!
London
A very sharp contrast in location and setting – much is set in and around Guy’s Hospital. Some emotional scenes here!
I’ve spent a very lovely but also very emotional weekend with this book. Between the Scottish highlands and the city of London, two medical staff change places in order to recover from past traumas and the result is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time..
I nearly didn’t read this as it’s about hospital work and PTSD and what medical staff go through day to day, but this is Jenny Colgan so I knew I’d be in safe hands. I also loved being back in the little village of Kirrinfief where Jenny has taken us before. Imagine living here and then being placed in London to work. Imagine coming from London to here!
The idea of a location swap and then the two characters finding that distance might not be the obstacle they first imagined is a lovely idea and one I was happy to read about. These are characters easy to care about and you wonder what you would feel like in the same circumstances.
Despite the feel-good cover there are some tough issues in this book but that’s what makes it so complete. Jenny writes about serious issues in a very accessible and careful way and…well…you’ll just have to read it for yourself.
